Manila FAME

After having seen such beautiful vignettes in the past years of one of our favorite design shows, this year’s show broke our hearts. The lobby was a bit too plain and the displays were not as mind-blowing as we hoped they will be. Is it because of the economic crisis or is it because we expected too much?

Manila FAME is open to the public on 18 April 2009.

Weaving Art in Architecture

Check out this winning design of the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) in Edmonton Canada, to be opened in 2010. Designed by Randall Stout Architect, the design utilizes a “ribbon of stainless steel” that emerges through the exterior of the gallery, enveloping the glass structure of the building. The interiors, on the other hand, is far from its sculptural vista. The gallery areas are simple, stacks of cubes serving as blank canvases for the artworks.

Even from outside, the gallery itself is an exhibition.

TutoK’s First for 2009

tutok

An invitation from TutoK:

TutoK’s first offering for 2009 opens at Tala Gallery on April 16, 2009, with a group exhibition on art and education featuring artists who are also teachers in formal and informal venues.

“TutoK-EDUK” presents works in various media by Brenda V. Fajardo, Roberto Feleo, Gerardo Leonardo, Buen Calubayan, Noel Soler Cuizon, Karen Ocampo Flores, Boyet de Mesa, Kirby Roxas, Don Salubayba, Mark Salvatus, and Wesley Valenzuela.

The exhibit paves the way for TutoK’s inquiry into the state of education. Beginning with this exhibit by artist-teachers— artists who hone artistic skills and minds through academic channels, as well as artists who are active in cultural work among sectors and communities. The premise of course is that education is a continuous and dynamic process; that beyond the job, artists are essentially sustained by it as a vehicle for mutual exchange and development. Tutok’s focus on EDUK will provide more insights and discussions in its upcoming projects on education issues.

To be scheduled on the last two weeks of the exhibit will be a series of talks and workshops projected as critical interventions for the benefit of artists and art practices. Tutok’s program also plans to interface with summer educational programs for artists that will be held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines , the Printmakers’ Association of the Philippines (PAP) Workshop at the Folk Arts Theater and the UP College of Fine Arts .

“Tutok-EDUK” is curated by Don Salubayba, and is presented by TutoK in cooperation with Tala Gallery. Essays for the exhibition and catalogue are by Eileen Legaspi-Ramirez.

The exhibit will run from April 16 to May 7, 2009. Opening cocktails is on April 16 6:00pm. Call Tels.63.2.4411267 and 63.2.4010337 for more information.

Frank’s Not Dead

Frank Gehry, the architect whom we all have studied way back in college is still on a roll. He has recenty been chosen to implement his proposed design of the national memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This just shows that once a rockstar, always a rockstar—in architecture, that is.

The memorial structure is to be built on 4-acre land in Washington, DC. Gehry is discreet with his proposed design but he revealed that his concept was derived from the Lincoln Memorial, incorporating also Eisenhower’s achievements in stone reliefs. The design will reach around $90 and $110 million in cost and will take about five years to build.

New York exhibit design Edwin Schlossberg, landscape architect EDAW, and avant-garde theatre artist Robert Wilson will be joining Gehry in this project.
