DIY Album and CD Cover

As it is the bridal shower of our friend, Verl Ramos (who, before her current stint in Singapore was a former associate editor of a home and lifestyle magazine. She also has interior design units so she merits the mention =P), we were looking for things to make for her party. We chanced upon this post on Curby.com on creating your own CD cover from paper. This we thought was perfect for a future CD one of us created by following instructions from a Facebook note tag from landscape architect Mary Claire Villanueva in Singapore.
DOD's future album
Don’t you think this album is perfect for Drunk on Design?
Interested to create your own? Well, to do this:
1 – Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to “Random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 – Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 – Use photoshop or a similar editing program to put it all together.

If you are really feeling it, make a playlist of  “what designers should be listening to for inspiration,” burn it on a CD and give to your favorite designer. We would appreciate it if you would send one to us, too.
Cheers!

Manila Then and Now

MANILA TRANSITIO 1945
March 7, 2009
In February of 1945, history tells us that the City of Manila was completely destroyed in a battle between the United States Armed Forces and the Japanese Imperial Army. An estimated 120,000 people were lost and our beloved City of Manila was never the same again.

Manila Transitio is a multi-media event organized by the Intramuros Administration with Carlos Celdran and multi media artists Tad Ermitano, Donna Miranda, Mabi David, Kawayan de Guia, Malek Lopez, Caliph8, Ringo Bunoan, and several other artists that will celebrate Manila – the city that was and the Manila that will be.

An evening of performances, music, vintage photographs and films, video art, installations, open mic, food, drink, poetry and dance within different sections of The Fort Santiago, this will be a lovely alternative to spend your night.  Guest readings will be performed by Shamaine Buencamino, Roslyn Perez, Peter Serrano, Jake Macapagal, Jamie Wilson, and Aida Santos while  flamenco music wille be provided by Yerbaguena.

The symbolic release of 120 illuminated spirit lanterns into the night sky by the gates of Fort Santiago will cap the evening.

And the best part is, this multi-media event is FREE!
*Reasonably priced buffet and beer will be sold in Fort Santiago before the event. Or you can bring your own bottle of wine/picnic.

New Architects

An architect friend of ours once told us that during his first time to meet with his UAP chapter, he was quite surprised how every member would introduce themselves by saying “Hi. I am Architect (name) and I am from (firm).” He thought it was funny because everyone in the meeting was indeed an architect, so why the introduction with the title? When it was his turn on the mic, he said “Hi I am John Ryan Santos, and I am hungry. Let’s eat!”

Oh by the way, he topped his batch. :)

Released 22 days after the last day of board exams, the results show a 39% passing rate. The top performing schools with examinees below 50 are UP Diliman with 95% passing rate and University of San Carlos with 65% passing rate. UST ranks first with a passing rate of 66% for schools having above 50 examinees.

The examinees who garnered the top 10 ratings are:
1. Cerise Anne Abenoja Mina, Mapua Institute of Technology — 80.20%

2. Angello Cubol Adriano, Mapua Institute of Technology — 79.30%

3. Vangie Cheryl Cimafranca Ulila, University of San Carlos — 78.60%

For Art’s Sake

With the PIVAF ‘09 just recently concluded, may we just say, it was totally wonderful. And why wouldn’t it be, when you have 53 of the brightest artists both local and foreign all under one art fest. For a week, the Philippines became the converging point for artists from the divergent fields of painting, sculpture, traditional printmaking, installation, photography, digital art and the multimedia.

With that said, the art fest also offered a peek into the new direction where contemporary Philippine art is heading. We also caught up with project coordinator and renowned artist Ross Capili as he bravely offered insights about the problems and challenges that beset the arts here in the country. We’re saving that full article for later when Drunk on Design goes on full swing very soon, so do watch out for that. In the meantime, we’re posting a few art works from the PIVAF right here to whet all your appetites.

The IDEAS Festival

A walk at Southbank, Queensland

A walk at Southbank, Queensland

The Ideas Festival was started in 2001 to present ideas, promote public debate, and to foster and celebrate innovation. This year, the Festival is proudly presented by the Queensland Government as part of the Q150 celebrations, with Griffith University as a major sponsor.

The Ideas Festival covers a broad range covering five streams of IDEAS: I- nvention and innovation, D- evelopment and design, E- cology and ethics, A-ction and advocacy, S-elf and society.  New ideas, old ideas in new manifestations and the exchange of ideas across sector, across industry, across generations and across the room make this fest.

The Festival presents local, national and international speakers, alongside thinkers, doers, makers and observers. It aims to  to provide Queenslanders with access to and exposure to diverse ideas; present, celebrate and debate the quality ideas and inventive work of government, business, academia and community; and promote Queensland locally, nationally and internationally as an innovative, diverse and forward thinking place.

For more information on the festival, log on to www.ideasfestival.com.au. We loved the flash video created by artist Sue Loveday of the Brisbane design studio, Designfront, using found objects.

Let’s Help the Economy

bvz-guangzhou5

and this…

tiff-invite1

Yet some more big shows coming our way this March. Who of you will go?

We all should! Now that the world is experiencing some economic difficulties (well, we know we do have this every year), it is also the best time to travel and support our industries.  Go out and go to every design fair that you can afford. Not only are flights are getting cheaper, but the little money we put back into circulation can keep businesses afloat until the economy is able to pick up. Not to mention, if people went to the expos and fairs, it inspires our designers to remain creative despite everything.

We all need to consume. It is our obligation to. Okay, we are not advocating excessiveness here but if you can, do go out and travel by design.

Karim Rashid in Singapore

Karim Rashid, a well known designer of all sorts–interior, furniture, product and fashion is going to take Singapore by storm. Come March 11, 2009, he will be giving a furniture design forum entitled “DESIGN Shaping the Globalandskape” as part of Singapore Expo’s Furniture Design Showcase leg. To be held at the Foyer 1, Level 2 Conference D, E & F of the Expo, the forum promises to be educational both to design students and professionals.

Student rate for the forum is $30/pax (10% discount for 10 pax or more) while for non-members of the Singapore Forum (meaning us), it will $60/pax (10% discount for 3 pax or more).

The Furniture Design Showcase will also unveil Singapore’s up and coming young designers.
